2016 Yas Marina Feature Race 2017 Bahrain Feature Race

The 2016 Yas Marina Sprint Race, otherwise known as the 2016 Yas Marina Race 2 was the twenty-second and final round of the 2016 FIA GP2 Series, staged at the Yas Marina Circuit on the 27 November 2016.[1] The race would be remembered as the last ever GP2 race to be staged, prior to the Series being renamed to Formula Two, and would see Pierre Gasly take the title.[2][3]

Background

With no changes made to the Yas Marina Circuit overnight all of the attention prior to the final race of the season would be on the Championship, with various scenarios potentially set to play out. Indeed, Pierre Gasly would start the race as the Champion elect, holding a twelve point advantage over teammate Antonio Giovinazzi. That meant, with a maximum of seventeen points available, that Gasly would win the title if he finished fifth or higher, sixth or higher if Giovinazzi failed to record fastest lap, or score a single point with the Italian no higher than third.

In the Teams' Championship it was advantage Russian Time heading into the finale, with the Russian squad duelling with Racing Engineering to be runner-up. Indeed, with Prema Racing smashing past the 400 point mark out front, all of the attention in the Sprint for the teams would be on the fight for second, with two points separating the duo. ART Grand Prix were, however, still mathematically in the fight, but would need a maximum score to entertain any hopes of overhauling the pair.

Milestones

Standings

With that the 2016 edition of the FIA GP2 Series drew to a close, with Pierre Gasly declared as the final Champion. Indeed, the Frenchman's final tally of 219 kept him eight ahead of teammate Antonio Giovinazzi, with the pair also securing the Teams' Championship for Prema Racing. Third would go to Sergey Sirotkin on the final day, beating Raffaele Marciello by virtue of two wins, although they were sixty points off of Champion Gasly in the title hunt.

In the Teams' Championship it was Racing Engineering whom finishes as runners-up to Prema, edging out Russian Time by just two points. However, there was huge gap between themselves and the Italian based Champions, with 172 points separating the top two at the end of the season. Elsewhere, ART Grand Prix were a close fourth ahead of DAMS, while Arden International completed the table, having been the only team not to feature on the podium all season.
