2016 2018

The 2017 FIA Formula 2 Championship, otherwise known as the 2017 Formula Two Season, was the first season of the revived "Formula Two Championship" and the de facto thirteenth edition of the GP2 Series.[1] Staged across 22 races largely held in support of the Formula One World Championship, the 2017 edition of F2 would see one man dominate the season.

Indeed, with reigning GP2 Series Champion Pierre Gasly unable to defend his title in spite of the series' change of name, it was up in the air as to whom would win the first F2 Championship since 2012.[2] That opened the door for 2016 GP3 Series Champion Charles Leclerc to dominate the 2017 Championship, with the Monegasque racer claiming eight poles, eight victories, and 282 points to win the Championship with a round to spare.[3]

Leclerc would get his first victory of the season during the 2017 Bahrain Sprint Race, having claimed pole for the opening round two days earlier.[4] Indeed, the first victory of the season had gone to GP2 veteran Artem Markelov, although it would be the only time that the Russian found himself ahead of Leclerc all season.[5]

Instead, Oliver Rowland would lead the chase to stop Leclerc from taking the title, with the Brit briefly leading the Championship after claiming his first victory of the season in Monte Carlo.[6] Yet, Leclerc would resume his hold on the Championship with pole and victory in Baku, and would not lose the title lead again.[7]

Away from the fight for the title and there were numerous other race winners in 2017, with Nobuharu Matsushita the only man other than the top three to claim multiple victories.[8] The other winners in 2017 were Luca Ghiotto, Nicholas Latifi, Nyck de Vries, Antonio Fuoco, Norman Nato and Sérgio Sette Câmara.

In terms of the Teams' Championship it would be a season long truel between Russian Time, Prema Racing and DAMS for the honours. Ultimately it was Russian time who edged out Prema at the season finale, outscoring the Italian effort by fifteen points.[9] DAMS, meanwhile, would end the season in third, having seen Rowland disqualified from the 2017 Yas Marina Feature Race after claiming victory.[10]
