Giorgio Mondini (born 19 July 1980 in Vandoeuvres, Canton of Geneva, Switzerland) is a Swiss racing driver, who competed in the inaugural 2005 FIA GP2 Series for David Price Racing.[1] A replacement for Ryan Sharp mid-season, Mondini would not threaten the points in his ten GP2 starts, retiring from six races.[2]

Mondini notably raced with an Italian racing licence when he raced in GP2.

Background[]

Beginning his career in karting in southern France in his mid-teens, Mondini would make his race car debut in 2001, joining the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup at the age of 21.[2] After eleven races the Swiss racer would compete in the 2.0 Eurocup again in 2002, claiming a single victory as he improved to seventeenth in the Championship.[2] That led to a graduation to the V6 class of the Eurocup, with Mondini having a stronger campaign then previously, claiming seventh overall.[2]

Renault Rejoicing: 2004 - 2005[]

Mondini remained in the V6 Eurocup for the 2004 season, and would once again improve, claiming three victories en-route to the Championship.[2] The brought him a Formula Renault 3.5 seat and a test in a Formula One car with Renault, with Mondini going on to make his F1 test debut in December 2005.[2] However, his maiden FR 3.5 season would be interrupted, after the Swiss racer was offered the chance to compete in the new GP2 Series.[2]

GP2 Series History[]

Mondini was granted the chance to join the inaugural 2005 FIA GP2 Series ahead of the 2005 Hungaroring Feature Race, after Ryan Sharp had left David Price Racing to join Formula Renault 3.5.[3][1] Choosing to race under an Italian licence, Mondini duly made his GP2 debut at the Hungaroring, although he would retire from both of the races due to mechanical strife.[4]

Post GP2 Series Career[]

After making his Formula One test debut with Renault in December 2005, Mondini would secure a role as a test/reserve driver for Midland F1 in their first F1 campaign in 2006.[2] That meant he missed almost a full season of racing, although he would aid Team Switzerland to claim second in the A1 Grand Prix series for 2005-06.[2] For 2007 Mondini returned to Formula Renault 3.5, but only made a handful of races.[2]

From there Mondini's career faded, with intermittent campaigns in the Le Mans Series in 2009, and Italian Prototype Championship in 2015.[2] He would also test for the Hispania Racing Team in 2011, although failed to secure either a race or reserve role.[2]
