Juan Cruz Álvarez (born 20 November 1985 in Arrecifes, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina) is a Argentine racing driver, who competed in the inaugural 2005 FIA GP2 Series for Campos Racing.[1] A former World Series Light Champion, Álvarez would only complete on season of GP2, before returning to his native Argentina in 2007.[2]
Álvarez joined the Campos squad ahead of the inaugural GP2 season in 2005, partnering Sergio Hernández.[3] However, it would not be the best season for the Argentine youth, who was one of the youngest drivers in the field, with Álvarez only claiming 4.5 points across the season.[4]
As a result Álvarez would lose his GP2 seat at the end of 2005, and would sit out the entire 2006 racing season.[2] He duly returned to his native Argentina to race in various series, with other one-off drivers in various GT3 based series until 2019.[2]
Background
Álvarez's racing career began in karting, with the Argentine racer getting enough money to compete in the European ICA Junior Championship in 2000.[2] That funding led to his first race car seat in 2001 as Álvarez joined Formula Renault Argentina, where Álvarez would claim one win and finish third in the Championship in his rookie season.[2] For 2002 Álvarez would remain in his native Argentina in FR, although he would slip back to fourth in the title hunt.[2]
World Series Wonders: 2003 - 2004
For 2003 Álvarez moved to Europe to compete in the World Series Light, a support/feeder series for the World Series by Nissan.[2] It was there that Álvarez gained some career momentum, winning seven races in a row to claim the WSL title by 70 points.[2] That earned him a promotion to the full World Series in 2004, with the Argentine ending his rookie WS campaign in eighth.[2]
GP2 Series History
Álvarez moved to the FIA GP2 Series ahead of the inaugural 2005 season, signing up to join Sergio Hernández at the Campos Racing team.[1]
Post GP2 Series Career
Álvarez was left without a race seat in 2006, and would sit out the entire season as a result of a lack of funding.[2] After that, Álvarez returned to his native Argentina to compete in the Top Race V6 Argentina series, as well as the TC2000 Championship.[2] Those would be the main source of entertainment for Álvarez through to 2015, with the Argentine taking a career best second overall in 2010.[2]
In 2015 Álvarez began to wind down his career, instead taking one-off drives in various GT3 based series, although he would complete the full International GT Open series in 2018, finishing thirteenth.[2]
