Pedro Estácio Leão Piquet Souto Maior (born 3 July 1998 in Brasília, Brazil), more commonly known simply as Pedro Piquet, is a Brazilian racing driver who competes with Charouz Racing System in the 2020 FIA Formula 2 Championship.[1] The son of Formula One legend Nelson Piquet and the brother of 2006 GP2 Series runner-up Nelson Piquet Jr., Piquet would join F2 from the FIA Formula 3 Championship, and as a double former Champion in Fórmula 3 Brasil.[1]
Background
Piquet began karting at the age of eight in 2006, and would go on to win multiple karting titles in his native Brazil.[2] In 2014 Piquet switched focus to single-seaters, entering the Toyota Racing Series despite later being challenged about his racing licence due to his age.[2] After than Piquet returned to his native Brazil to compete in the Fórmula 3 Brasil for the rest of 2014.[2]
Brazilian Bounties
After his initial difficulties in the TRS, Piquet's 2014 season turned into a delirious one, for he dominated F3 Brazil and claimed the Championship with eleven victories.[2] The Brazilian opted to defend his title in 2015 alongside a campaign in the Brazilian Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge, and again proved to be dominant, securing fourteen wins in Brazilian F3 and the title.[2] With that, Piquet moved to Europe for 2016, albeit after opening his campaign with a successful return to the TRS, claiming two wins and fifth in that Championship.[2]
Piquet's main focus in 2016 would be the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, although the Brazilian failed to threaten the points in most races.[2] Regardless, Piquet would stick with F3 Europe for 2017, and duly improved to claim a maiden podium finish, having opened the season as runner-up in the TRS.[2] After that, the Brazilian racer moved into the GP3 Series for 2018, finishing that campaign in sixth with 106 points and two victories.[2]
2019 saw Piquet remain in the GP3 Series as it became the FIA Formula 3 Championship, with the Brazilian claiming another race win en-route to fifth in the Championship.[2]
Formula Two History
Piquet's first chance to sample an FIA Formula 2 Championship came at the 2019 Yas Marina Test, with the Brazilian racer testing for the Sauber Junior Team by Charouz across the three days.[3] After a strong showing Piquet was duly signed by Charouz for the 2020 season, partnering Louis Delétraz as the Swiss racer made his bid for the crown.[1]
